Trutpert Schneider and his sons Heinrich and Wilhelm traveled throughout Germany in the 1850s and 1860s photographing a wealthy clientele in major cities and country estates. The combination of the daguerreotype (with its perfect rendering of detail) and the stereograph (with its illusion of three dimensions when viewed in a stereoscope) proved irresistible to the makers and consumers of photography—a 19th-century version of virtual reality. In this engaging example showing the younger son, Wilhelm, in a salon, some objects have been hand-colored to further heighten the illusion and emphasize the variety and luxury of the setting.
