DescriptionSandra Brewster’s family history inspired her series "It’s a Blur." Her parents left their native Guyana for Toronto in the 1960s in search of a better life—an immigration story often told through the ID photos that facilitated their entry into Canada and later became family treasures. Worn by time, the photos represented the passage of many years and changes of location, but also an altered identity as her Guyanese parents became Canadian, at least in name. The indistinct and distressed style of Brewster’s photographs suggests that immigration not only displaces one geographically but also blurs or obscures one’s identity.
ProvenanceThe artist, Toronto; [Georgia Scherman Projects, Toronto]; purchased by MFAH, 2019.
