DescriptionWoodland paths, waterfalls and ponds, and fantastic structures dot the Bois de Boulogne, the royal hunting grounds at the western edge of Paris that was redesigned as an expansive public park for bourgeois recreation in the 1850s. Charles Marville, who would later document the transformation of Paris under Napoleon III, was commissioned to photograph the new park. His crisp photographs capture the beauty of the place and suggest the possible pleasures it afforded.
