DescriptionFor ten months, Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger embedded with American troops in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan to film the documentary Restrepo. Life at the remote outpost—one of the most dangerous postings in the world—alternated between extreme danger and great boredom. Hetherington’s image of Sergeant Tanner Stichter lifting weights suggests the vulnerability, intimacy, and isolation of the soldiers’ daily lives. “Their name for us was ‘Infidel’,” wrote Junger in the foreword to Hetherington’s book of that title, “. . . and after a while the men began to tattoo the word in huge letters across their chests.”
ProvenanceThe artist; purchased by Charles Dee Mitchell, Dallas, January 6, 2011; given to MFAH, 2019.
