Object Type
DescriptionThese hexagonal tiles exemplify the influential role that blue-and-white Chinese porcelain played in the Islamic world. Chinese-style scrolling foliage is seamlessly juxtaposed with native Syrian plants and depictions of familiar objects like ewers. The tiles were also influential for the designer Lockwood de Forest (1850–1932) who incorporated them in American home interiors in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
ProvenanceLockwood de Forest, late 19th century; by descent, the Lockwood de Forest family; [Christie's London, King Street, Sale 15984, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, Including Oriental Rugs and Carpets, 26 April, 2018, Lot 29]; purchased by MFAH, 2018.
