DescriptionWhen Jared Bark purchased a second-hand photo booth in 1973, it became
his private theater and studio. Rather than using it to make a series of
headshots, Bark thought more abstractly. Holding black or white board, objects,
or parts of his body in front of the camera, he envisioned a sequence of strips
that, when assembled, would form a larger composition. Referencing ideas
current in the mid- 1970s, including seriality, minimalism, conceptualism,
performance, chance, and the body, Bark’s photo booth strips are quintessential
expressions of their moment.

ProvenanceThe artist; [Yancey Richardson Gallery, New York]; purchased by MFAH, 2018.
