DescriptionAt the time Thomas Gainsborough made the painting on which this engraving is based, Charlotte had been married to King George III for about twenty years. She was seventeen at the time of her wedding in 1761 and had fifteen children with George. Gainsborough Dupont, a nephew and student of Thomas Gainsborough, made this mezzotint engraving after his uncle’s painting of Charlotte wearing an extravagantly ruffled gown.
