DescriptionThe figures on this pair of candlesticks represent Venus and Mars, the Roman gods of love and war, respectively. In Roman mythology, Venus was married to Vulcan, god of fire, but had an affair with Mars, which became a popular subject in the visual arts.
Provenance[Helen McGehee Antiques, Palm Beach, Florida]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, October 5, 1970; given to MFAH, 1970.
