French manufactures, like the British, sought markets for their wares in the new United States. This pair of porcelain vases depicts the first two presidents of the United States, George Washington and John Adams. The likenesses of Washington and Adams were likely taken from 1812 engravings of the first four presidents by Thomas Gimbrede.
