DescriptionAsa Blanchard, probably born and trained in Virginia, moved to Lexington, Kentucky, in 1806, a move that coincided with the mass migration of merchants and craftsmen to the region to take part in its pioneer market economy. Blanchard became early Kentucky’s most prolific and successful smith. He is best known for straightsided tumblers such as these, a defining Kentucky silver form associated with the mint julep, a drink made with a distilled spirit sweetened with sugar and flavored with mint.
Provenance[Alfred Marks, Lexington, Kentucky]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, April 9, 1959; given to MFAH, by 1966.
