Esther Bubley was one of the first female photographers to make a living in the male-dominated world of photojournalism in the 1940s and 1950s. She also received recognition in the art world and was included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and in a solo show in 1956 at Limelight Gallery. Bubley’s work provides a rich and revealing look at the United States in the postwar period. This color print depicts the bustling street below an elevated train station in New York City. The dark beams and tracks arc ominously around the bright street, possibly symbolizing the cloud of war slowly departing from daily life.
