DescriptionOriginally, this pair of lamps would have included a fitting at the top to hold one or two wicks in place. Such lamps could have burned whale oil or a variety of other fuels. After the Civil War, kerosene derived from petroleum rapidly became the most popular fuel for lighting, and lamps such as this pair became obsolete.
