On a trip to Rome in 1985, Adam Fuss encountered this
1st-century Roman sculpture of a reclining river god, Marforio, in the courtyard
of the Capitoline Museum. “During the day, at the museum, the sculptures were stripped
of their essence as religious objects, carved personifications of gods,
goddesses, and heroes,” Fuss wrote. “What I experienced at night was closer to
their potency.” With
a simple pinhole camera that exaggerated perspective and
encircled his subject in darkness, Fuss found that he could more closely
re-create his firsthand experience.
