DescriptionThis print depicts an incident that took place during the American Revolution as British general John Burgoyne’s troops headed south from Canada in 1777 to engage American defenders. Simon Fraser, commanding troops at the head of Burgoyne’s forces, faced strong American opposition. Fraser fought with conspicuous bravery and was successful in several actions, but on October 7, 1777, he was mortally wounded by an American sharpshooter and expressed a dying wish to be buried on the battlefield. Burgoyne surrendered to Gates soon afterward, marking a turning point in the revolution. The print portrays a large group of figures at the moment of lowering Fraser’s shrouded body into the ground, evoking depictions of the entombment of Christ.
