DescriptionAn engraved crowned monogram on these important examples of early German silver indicates that they were made for Georg Ludwig, the Elector of Hanover. The leader of a small German state, Ludwig would go on to become King George I of England in 1714. Beyond the significance of their royal commission, these sconces are beautiful examples of the repoussé technique of working silver in which the metal is ornamented by hammering from the reverse side.

ProvenanceProbably George Ludwig,1660–1727, Elector of Hanover and King of England; through his direct descendants to Ernest Augustus, third Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale and Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg; (perhaps the Viennese dealer Glückselig in 1923–24); [French & Co., Inc., New York, by 1950, Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. Collection]; ... ; [Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, lot 472]; purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Harris Masterson III, May 6, 1960; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1996.
