Susan Wides’s series This: seasons offers colorful, kaleidoscopic views of the natural world. Through careful and continual observation of nature, Wides makes use of unusual perspectives and the ability to control the camera’s focal point. The resulting works are multilayered images where natural forms in the foreground are left blurred, while details in the background come into sharper focus. This unusual method of composition seems disorienting when approached from a human perspective, but it forces us to consider the perspectives of plants and various natural phenomenon—including wind and water—in ways that decenters human subjectivity.
