DescriptionIn
Lissa Rivera’s tender and glamorous portraits of her then friend, now partner
BJ Lillis, photographer and subject reject stigma and shame, choosing instead
to create confessional images that explore gender expression and intimacy. One
evening in 2014, Lillis told Rivera that though he had dressed in women’s clothes
in college, publicly presenting as feminine was now complicated by the
expectations of his office job. Emerging from conversations about struggles
with gender, Beautiful Boy became a platform for artist and muse to
celebrate the intricacies of identity and femininity.

ProvenanceThe artist, Brooklyn; [ClampArt, New York]; purchased by MFAH, 2017.
