DescriptionAlthough in recent years minor Photoshop adjustments to photojournalists’ pictures have caused scandals, heavy retouching with ink and gouache was once common. In this example of the Kennedy family, the print was altered to emphasize the relationship between father and daughter. Once the rest could easily be cropped out, there was no need to continue overpainting the figure of Jackie. The result, however, is uncanny, all the more so because it would ultimately be the smiling John F. Kennedy, instead, who would be erased from the happy family.
