Description

Among the most lavish of Second Empire monuments, Charles
Garnier’s elaborately decorated Neo-Baroque Paris Opéra devoted as much space
and luxe to grand ceremonial arcades, foyers, and staircases as to the theater hall.
Louis-Émile Durandelle documented the construction and decoration of the Opéra
for a decade. Here, stone carvers 200 feet above the street chip away at
enormous garlands of fruit that form a decorative frieze on the stage tower.
