DescriptionAmong the most influential postwar American photographers, Harry Callahan made this image as he was beginning to transition from avid amateur to professional photographer, and it represents his first exploration of the layering of time. Playing with the idea of sequential imagery, he grouped together three images taken by setting his camera in one location and shooting multiple sheets of film. Together, the images capture minute variations in the subject, referencing time through change and difference despite the unclear sequence. The resulting suggested narrative seems to defy a linear progression of time.
