DescriptionThis magical early Russian picture of St. Basil’s is the work of Scherer & Nabholz, Swiss photographers who had set up shop in Moscow by the late 1850s and remained the principal purveyors of Russian topographic views throughout the 19th century. Here, the position, lighting, masking, and vignetting make the cathedral appear isolated, like some tabletop confection, and give it an appearance similar to a topographic lithograph or aquatint in which the artist’s hand might be suspected of exaggeration.
Provenance[Robert Hershkowitz, Sussex, England]; [Vintage Works, Chalfont, Pennsylvania]; purchased by MFAH, 2015.
