DescriptionWhile evoking the long British tradition of landscape depiction, Davies is equally interested in the history of the sites that he photographs. Monkwearmouth Colliery in the northeastern English county of Durham was the last of the region’s coal mines to remain operating, and it too closed a decade after Davies’s photograph, ending more than eight hundred years of commercial coal mining in the area.
