Jesse Whitehurst was a successful and prolific daguerreotypist, largely in the American South, establishing studios in Baltimore and Washington, through Virginia and into North Carolina. This hand-colored daguerreotype of a painted portrait reveals photography’s role in the burgeoning media culture of the 19th century—although each daguerreotype is unique, the medium was also capable of making accurate copies of paintings, drawings, or even other photographs.
Provenance[Helder Costa, Arlington, Massachusetts,1982]; purchased by MFAH, 2015.
