Jesse Whitehurst was a successful and prolific daguerreotypist, largely in the American South, establishing studios in Baltimore and Washington, through Virginia and into North Carolina. This hand-colored daguerreotype of a painted portrait reveals photography’s role in the burgeoning media culture of the 19^th century—although each daguerreotype is unique, the medium was also capable of making accurate copies of paintings, drawings, or even other photographs.
