DescriptionA native of Nagoya, Kunié Sugiura studied photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she earned her BFA in 1967, the year this photograph was made. Although she had intended to study industrial design, she was drawn to the expressive possibilities of color photography by the work of Eliot Porter (surprisingly). In her senior year, she established a signature style of highly mediated images, often including silhouettes of figures (as here) or organic matter integrated with color washes. Works from the CKO series required complex multiple printing of negatives and flashes of colored light; each print is unique. For the artist, according to an article at the time, “the young man clutching his knee . . . represented alienated man bound up in his separateness,” but it is difficult to view the picture without also sensing the sexiness and psychedelia that were a part of 1960s youth culture.
ProvenanceThe artist; [Leslie Tonkonow, New York]; purchased by MFAH, 2014.
