Building on a storied history of American landscape photographers, Joel Sternfeld set out in the late 1970s to make his own large-scale pictures of the country. Repeatedly drawn to the suburbs while photographing for his series American Prospects, Sternfeld captured the quiet conformity of this suburban development outside of Portland set beneath an overcast sky. Along a street dotted by fresh rain puddles, the monotony of manicured landscaping and mulch is broken only by the bold styling of a lone Cadillac coupe. Sternfeld’s attention to color, scale, and composition bring a heightened sense of reflection to an otherwise mundane scene.
