Description

The heavy application of color in this work reveals not only the common desire to overcome the medium’s limited monochrome palette but also a conscious attempt to emulate the established fine arts. In painting the portrait, the artist was able to introduce a refined setting and seascape background beyond the setup of the studio while maintaining the photographic veracity of portraiture in leaving the sitter’s face and hands unretouched.

ProvenanceEarly provenance unknown; Bernard Quaritch Ltd., London; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX, 2014.
