Andy Warhol embraced visual culture in all of its forms,
but his favorite tool may have been the instant camera. “He always carried this
stupid camera,” recalled his collector friend Hanford Yang. “Everyone wanted to
talk to Andy, but Andy was busy taking photographs.” Warhol was never without
his Polaroid camera from his first model in the late 1950s until his death in
1987. In those decades, he created a huge collection of pictures of friends,
lovers, his dog, and himself. “I don’t believe in art,” Warhol wrote. “I
believe in photography.”
