Description

Unlike
the sharpness of the metalbased daguerreotype, paper processes yield prints on
fibrous paper, comparable to etchings and drawings. This composition of a young
Scottish boy with a flyfishing rod, creel, and catch of graylings utilizes the
warm tones and matte surface of the salted paper process to bolster the
artistic statement.

His
oversized clothes and position outside a doorway would suggest to a
19th century audience that the boy is at the threshold of adulthood. This
subtly symbolic scene, enhanced through the artistic qualities of paper photography,
evokes a childhood filled with traditional Scottish pastimes and hints at
adulthood on the horizon.
