DescriptionThe Shaw Memorial, a life-size relief sculpture on the edge of Boston Common that is the American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s masterpiece, commemorates the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, an African American regiment that fought heroically in the Civil War. Richard Benson photographed the monument during a period of neglect, when the streaked patina of the bronze seemed to make the sculptor’s work all the more poignant.
