To make this work, James Welling painted and manipulated a thin sheet of clear Mylar before placing it on top of photographic paper to make an exposure. He then repeated the process to make additional photograms that built upon the layers used for the previous images. Inspired by poetry, text, and libraries, Welling’s process mimics the acquisition of knowledge, in which new revelations build upon old ones, creating a complex web of understanding.
