Description

In 1890, having studied with and assisted the prominent portrait
photographer Gertrude Käsebier, Alice Boughton established her own studio in
New York City. Like Käsebier, she favored the platinum process, soft focus, and
elaborate presentation characteristic of Pictorialist photography at the start
of the 20th century, drawing notice from Alfred Stieglitz, who exhibited her
work and published it in his journal, Camera Work. Over the course of 40
years, Boughton established her name photographing prominent literary and theatrical
figures such as the renowned British actress Ellen Terry, shown here in an
intimate domestic moment, rather than in a theatrical role.
