Description

The first truly mechanized war required industrialized
production. Thus, in England during World War I, about two million people were
engaged in munitions work. Liverpool alone was home to eight plants of this
type and more than 90 percent of the workforce was women. Photography also played
a role in this war effort, promoting the precision and efficiency of these
factories for public morale. In this photograph, the productivity and
dependability of the factory is affirmed by the strong lines, impeccable
geometry, and vibrant light throughout the scene.
