DescriptionIn 1861, Mary Todd Lincoln ordered an extensive new porcelain dinnerware service for the White House from the French firm of Haviland and Company, placing the order through the New York firm of Haughwout and Company. Sometimes called the Solefino service for its rich purple-red color, it remained in use after the end of the Lincoln presidency and subsequent orders were made during the Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, and Chester Arthur administrations. This soup bowl is from one of the later orders.
Provenance[Avis and Rockwell Gardinir, Stamford, Connecticut]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, May 28, 1968; given to MFAH, 1968.
