Using geometric abstraction, Rojas evokes the physical,
cultural, and historical experience of landscape in the Americas. Inspired by a
visit to Manhattan, Segunda avenida
depicts an aerial view of the city as a series of overlapping vertical and
horizontal lines. Paying homage to Piet Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie (1943), which portrays the city through a
dynamic grid-based configuration, Rojas captures the structural essence of the
urban landscape, compressing its topographic depth into a single flat plane.
ProvenanceThe artist, Bogotá; by inheritance to his sister, Rosse Mary Rojas, Bogotá, 1997; sold to MFAH, 2016.
