Homosexuality has been illegal in Uganda since the time
of British colonial rule. Kuchus—a Swahili word appropriated by the Ugandan LGBTQ
community that roughly translates to “queer”—daily face the threat of violence,
discrimination, and imprisonment. The documentary photographer Daniella Zalcman
began working with the Ugandan LGBTQ community in 2011, photographing couples
like “R” and “C.” Although both men face danger, one is turned toward
Zalcman’s camera in open defiance, while the other turns away, his face further
obscured by light. Robert Luzinda (left) has since fled the country, as Uganda has
become increasingly unsafe for LGBTQ people and activists.
