The overall form of this small, multipurpose, tripod stand with a marble top is based on antique prototypes. Other references to antiquity—the turned Roman-inspired feet, the Egyptian-inspired lotus-shaped capitals of the columns, and the extensive use of black paint and gilt stenciled ornament, all features associated with the later phases of the Grecian style—are found in examples made in New York City.
