DescriptionThough best known for her photographs of New York City, Berenice Abbott photographed throughout the US. Regardless of geography, her work was consistently inspired by Eugène Atget’s photographs of a disappearing Paris, in which she found “the real world, seen with wonderment and surprise.” Abbott chronicled man-made environments and the changes wrought by time. American Shops, Lodi exposes the oddities of the postwar car-centered culture in California.
ProvenanceRonald A. Kurtz; given to MFAH, 1987.
