DescriptionThis cellarette, intended to hold wine bottles, may have been made with a matching sideboard, under which it would have stood when not in use. In keeping with early nineteenth-century designers’ interest in classical antiquity, its form is related to that of the ancient Roman sarcophagus, or stone coffin.
Provenance[Peter Hill, Washington, D.C.]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, 1967; given to MFAH, 1967.
