Description

Espinoza belongs to a generation of Venezuelan conceptual
artists who set out to critique the legacy of Constructivism. Here, he seeks to
destabilize the structural coherence of orthogonal painting favored by other
artists in this gallery. The large square appears to be falling onto the floor,
revealing the unprimed, unstretched canvas’s true nature and formal flexibility.
The work is a performative subversion of the grid and square inherent to modes
of Constructivism and geometric abstraction.
