DescriptionThroughout
his life—even after the introduction of roll film and handheld cameras—Atget
photographed with a large, tripod-mounted camera and commercially prepared
“gelatin dry plate” glass negatives. He made contact prints, placing the
negative directly on photographic paper, rather than projecting it through an
enlarger; his negatives and positives are therefore the same size. Atget
printed on three types of photographic paper: most are on a thin albumen-coated
paper that was the standard during the 19th century; some prints are on a
heavier, glossier, and somewhat rosier gelatin-coated paper; and a small number
are printed on a beautiful, velvety, matte-surface albumen paper.
