DescriptionThis photograph was illustrated on the cover of the book The Face of New York: The City as It Was and as It Is (1953), which consists of prints, drawings, and photographs selected by Andreas Feininger. The illustrations in the book are accompanied by comments from historian Susan E. Lyman. The book portrays the 300-year transformation of a Dutch settlement into a metropolis of skyscrapers, a transformation that occurred up to the time that the book was published. Shot with a telephoto lens from the New Jersey shore over the Hudson River on a hazy day, Feininger dematerialized the architecture of steel and glass as ephemeral shadows, revealing an unknown, organic aspect of the monuments of the modern era.
