DescriptionThis
commemorative album was commissioned by those depicted on its pages, employees
of the Hartshorne Brewery in Woodville, Derbyshire, England, and presented to
the brewery’s director, Samuel Ratcliff, on the occasion of his marriage.
“Every man and boy has given his mite voluntarily and cheerfully,” noted the
dedication. Nine group portraits, of managers, clerks, foremen, maltsters,
delivery men, night watchman, and others, are included with an index of their
names, ages (14 to 71), and years in service at the brewery. Here, the men who
stirred the barley mash and shoveled the spent grain present themselves proudly
with their tools.

Provenance[Paul M. Hertzmann, Inc., San Francisco]; purchased by MFAH, 2012.
