Object Type
ProvenanceStudio of the artist, 1878 [1]; Private collection, Paris (possibly in 1938) [2]; [sale, Palais Galliéra, Paris, “Collection de Mr. X,” June 18, 1969, lot 49, as “La Seine à Paris,” illus.] [3]; purchased by Mr. and Mrs. John A. Beck, Houston, 1969; given to the MFAH, 1971.

[1] The present work was still in the artist’s possession in 1878; it hangs in the background of the artist’s studio in another painting by Guillaumin, executed in 1878, depicting the seated figure of Dr. Martinez---a fellow artist and friend. [Guillaumin’s “Portrait of Dr. Martinez in Guillaumin’s studio, 1878” was formerly in the Iris and B Gerald Cantor Collection, Los Angeles. See Conisbee, Philip et al. Monet to Matisse; French Art in Southern California Collections (Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Museum of Art , June 9-August 11, 1991), p. 45.]

[2] The Galerie Raphaël Gerard, Paris, held an exhibition entitled “Sélection d’oeuvres de Guillaumin (1841-1927)” from 4-26 November 1938. The present work was listed in the catalogue as cat. no. 5: “Quai Henri IV” without indication of the owner. An image of the label for the Galerie Raphaël Gerard that had once been affixed to the verso of the painting, now removed, is recorded in the MFAH object file; the label corroborates the identification of the exhibited work. [accessed by Robert McD. Parker, April 2024.]

[3] The MFAH object file includes a copy of the bill of sale from this auction. [accessed by Robert McD. Parker, April 2024.]
