DescriptionMoses Austin was one of the earliest Anglo-American settlers of Texas (then part of Mexico) and father of Stephen F. Austin. Moses Austin died not long after concluding contracts with the Mexican government to permit Anglo-American settlements in Texas. Stephen F. Austin continued his father’s work. Sarkis Erganian painted this portrait many years after the subject’s death. Of Armenian descent, he studied in Constantinople (now Istanbul) and Paris, and later moved to New York City and then to St. Louis.
