Description

Arkady
Shaikhet was the leading photojournalist for the Russian newspapers Krasnaya Niva and Moscow Proletarian. In 1924, he joined the staff of the national
magazine Ogonyok, where many of his photographs, including this one, were used
as cover images.

Shaikhet shot Assembling the Globe at Moscow Telegraph Central Station from a low
angle, making the figures appear larger than life, and set them against a metal
globe, the national emblem of the USSR. By merging the silhouetted figures of
the workers with the globe, Shaikhet infused the image with the socialist
agenda—the people for the state and the state for the people.
