this photomontage, Martha Rosler evokes a sense of uneasiness through the
surreal juxtaposition of a runway, representing the war in Vietnam, and cutout
images of perfect-looking American housewives culled from popular magazines
such as Life, Newsweek, and House Beautiful.
The montage illustrates the metaphorical collision of two worlds, revealing the
disparate realities confronting Americans in the 1960s and 1970s. The work also
links antiwar protests with the concomitant bitter gender war awakened by the
rise of the feminist movement. By changing the images’ original contexts,
Rosler produces what critics call an “agitational tableau.”
