DescriptionEver the innovator with a keen eye toward serving changing tastes, Josiah Wedgwood developed and perfected during the late 1760s a new type of fine-grained, dark-bodied stoneware that he called “black basaltes.” Reflecting the growing contemporary interest in classical antiquity, he began using the black basalt body to construct objects that mimicked the forms and decoration of ancient Greek pottery. Wedgwood also employed black basalt for useful objects such as tea wares, as well as other classically inspired decorative objects and sculptures.
