DescriptionThis colorful bowl was made about 1770 in the porcelain manufacturing center of Jingdezhen in southern China for export to the West. Porcelain made there was transported to the port of Canton where it was decorated. The buildings depicted on the bowl are of the Canton "hongs," or warehouses, of the foreign firms who came to China to trade for porcelain, silk, tea, and other goods that were highly prized in Europe and America. The new nation of the United States began direct trade with China in 1785.
Provenance[The Jay Dorf Collection of Chinese Export Porcelain, Christie, Manson & Woods, Ltd., London, October 17, 1966, lot 130]; [The Art Exchange, New York]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, 1967; given to MFAH, 1967.
