Description

German-born potter William Saenger came to the United States in 1874 and lived in New Jersey and Kansas before arriving in Bexar County, Texas. His first pottery was in St. Hedwig but he moved to Elmendorf for better clay and started a pottery there in 1886, producing salt-glazed and slip-glazed wares.

This jug features two three-gallon capacity marks: one boldly inscribed in cobalt slip and the other impressed high on the shoulder.
