DescriptionDuring the confusion of adolescence, a girl’s bedroom can be a place of comfort and security. For Anna, the subject of Rania Matar’s picture, it is her most sacred space, where her polished pink toenails peek through ripped tights, and where her intense gaze matches that of Jimi Hendrix in a poster reflected above her in a mirror. Matar’s powerful and intimate series of girls in their rooms explores the shared experiences of coming of age, as well as the intricacies of being a young woman in a specific time and place.
